The departments accommodation consists of three general resistant material workshops, each with an emphasis on Wood and Machining, Metal and Engineering, and Plastics and CAD CAM. Recent investments include a new Forge/Heat treatment area and laser-cutter. The school has a flexible booking system for ICT use. STRUCTURE Junior House (Key Stage 2) (boys aged 7 to 11) Design Technology is taught for one double period a week. There is a clearly structured, yet flexible scheme of work that leads naturally into KS3. First, Second and Third Form (Key Stage 3) The Technology Department and Art Department work together to teach units of work under the umbrella of Art, Design and Technology (ADT). This is taught for two double periods a week. Work follows a modular pattern and explores themes in both two and three-dimensions. Teachers in the Technology Department lead pupils in focused practical activities in a range of resistant materials, and mechanical and electrical control. Fourth and Fifth-Form (Key Stage 4) On average about 20-30 boys, in each year, study Design and Technology to GCSE level. The department follows the Design Technology (9-1) AQA syllabus. Pupils are encouraged to work in a variety of materials and to a range of briefs for their Controlled Assessment projects. Sixth-Form The department follows the AQA specification in Design Technology Product Design. The group averages about 6 pupils, which enables a variety of teaching processes and experiences. Pupils produce a range of outcomes to their coursework in LV1 including sustainable designs for laser-cut MP3 Amplifiers, finely crafted silvers-mithing and ergonomics projects. UV1 projects enable pupils to choose their briefs and can be ambitious in scale. General Information The department places a strong emphasis on teaching and learning through practical activity. Teachers encourage pupils to be discerning their use of tools and materials and to take responsibility for their work. Facilities include specialist woodworking/machining, silversmithing/engineering and plastics/fabrication workshops. The department has a working forge and foundry.
